Artist profile

Diana Purchas

Diana graduated from University College, Falmouth in 1999,  and after doing conventional oil painting en plein air for about 5 years, she started creating her archetypal collages, mainly of Cornish Streets.

By drawing each building in her chosen subject in ink and watercolour, she has built up quite a large body of work.  Starting with the village where she lives, Perranuthnoe, she moved onto Chapel Street, Penzance, where she used to work, and from there to the Barbican, Plymouth, Truro, Helston, Falmouth, Marazion, St. Michael’s Mount and Modbury (Devon) and she is currently working on St. Ives.

Diana loves detail and the differences in buildings, right down to the idiosyncrasies of peculiar extensions;   and from doing a small portrait of each building, which she then cuts out, she builds up a whole picture in order to form a satisfactory composition.   Though very time-consuming, over the years she has built up quite a library of prints.  There are always different places to catch her eye, such as Falmouth Road, Truro, which provided a real challenge.  The prints illustrate the streets they portray without being a faithful copy, thereby providing continuing interest to the viewer.
